Tanner Toppel, a rising star in the presidential race, is facing mounting criticism after reports surfaced about questionable financial practices involving his nonprofit organization, Forward Futures, which claims to help displaced workers transition into tech and green energy jobs.
The controversy centers around the inflated wage that Toppel receives as the executive director of the nonprofit.
Excessive Salary Raises Concerns
According to tax filings obtained by C-Spam, Toppel’s salary as the executive director of Forward Futures has significantly exceeded that of similar nonprofit organizations. In 2021, Toppel earned a reported salary of $320,000—over three times the national median for nonprofit executive directors in organizations of a similar size. While Toppel has defended the figure as necessary to attract top talent to the nonprofit, critics argue that such a high salary is out of step with the organization’s mission to help working-class Americans, particularly those affected by automation and job displacement.
"Tanner Toppel has built his entire campaign on promises of fairness and supporting working-class Americans," said Jude Sumner, a critic of Toppel’s policies. "But this raises serious questions about whether he's practicing what he preaches. It’s hard to argue that he’s in it for the people when he’s raking in such a large paycheck at the expense of the very workers he claims to support."
